The appearance, texture and longevity of a carpet are largely determined by its fibre type. Carpets come in both natural and man-made fibre types.

+ Wool

A natural fibre from sheep, wool is renewable and sustainable.

  • Wool carpets have a natural and soft luxurious feel.
  • The unique fibre structure is strong and hard-wearing and provides natural protection to help resist staining and soiling.
  • Wool carpets absorb noise so are quiet and naturally flame retardent so are safe.
  • Wool’s natural properties help keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter.
  • Wool fibres are natural, renewable and biodegradeable.

+ Wool Blends

Wool, mixed with a synthetic fibre.

  • Wool blends are usually 80% wool and 20% synthetic fibre but also come in a variety of other mixes, including the latest Wool Bamboo Fibre Blend.
  • Wool and synthetic blends offer the resilience and durability found in synthetic fibres with the natural appearance and luxurious feel of wool.
  • Mixing synthetic fibre with wool can help to hold the twist definition in some carpet styles, providing improved durability and reduced shedding from short fibres.
  • Wool Bamboo Fibre Blend carpet bring the benefits of two sustainable, high performing materials to the floor for luxurious softness, durability and natural style.

+ eco + Triexta

A new fibre made with 37% renewably sourced polymer from corn sugar*.

  • Extremely soft, it provides high stain, soil, wear and colourfast performance.
  • Triexta fibres are made with polymer from 37% corn sugar*.
  • *DuPont Sorona contains 37% renewably sourced ingredients by weight.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from the production of Sorona are 63% lower than nylon 6.

+ Nylon

A synthetic fibre.

  • Nylon carpets provide long term resilience, durability and stain resistance.
  • As nylon fibres readily accept dye they have a large colour palette.
  • SDN (solution dyed nylon) is dyed prior to extrusion so the colour is an integral part of the yarn – much like a carrot is orange all the way through.
  • SDN is highly regarded for its excellent abrasion resistance. In terms of pure wear, SDN outperforms every other carpet fibre.
  • SDN is very resilient, so these carpets can be cleaned with harsher cleaners.
    • In general, SDN has superior light degradation, dye ability, elastic recovery, fatigue resistance and thermal stability.

+ Polyester

A less expensive synthetic fibre.

  • Polyester carpets are less expensive than nylon, it once had a reputation for being of poor quality. However, in recent years, the quality of polyester fibre has improved considerably and it can offer an excellent value choice for the budget conscious.
  • Beautifully soft, they are well suited to low traffic areas.
  • Are less luxurious but still soft and provide good colour fastness.
  • When new, polyester carpets look beautiful, belying their economical price. The fibre has a very luxurious “hand” and also come in some of the richest colours of any fibre. Because it is process-dyed, polyester has excellent fade resistance, while its relatively soft fibres give a rich feel, with high “perceived” quality.

+ Polyproplene

Polypropylene is a less expensive synthetic fibre manufactured from man-made materials.

  • Polypropylene carpets are less expensive, colourfast and resist most stains.
  • Usually manufactured into loop style carpets, they are great for low traffic areas.
  • The superior colourfast properties of polypropylene are due to the colour that is incorporated in the actual structure of the fibre.
  • Polypropylene filaments have outstanding abrasion resistance.
  • Polypropylene has excellent stain resistance, ensuring your carpet will maintain its great looks for many years.
  • As peoples and families move more towards informal lifestyles, including eating on couches and casual furniture, stain resistance is becoming an extremely important carpet attribute.
  • Polypropylene filament has the lowest inherent electrostatic build-up of all synthetic fibres. This is increasingly important in homes and offices in which expensive electrical equipment is located.
